Applying for a charity place
What are you looking for in an application?
We will be taking into account your connection to our cause and motivation behind wanting to run the 2019 Virgin Money London Marathon for the Dementia Revolution. We will also look at your previous support of either Alzheimer's Society or Alzheimer's Research UK and your fundraising target and plan. Make sure to be as detailed and imaginative as possible!
Can I change my application?
If you have submitted an application already but would like to update it, please complete this online form again with any changes.
When do I have to raise the minimum sponsorship by?
We would expect you to hit your minimum pledge target 6 weeks after marathon day and we have plenty of fundraising tips to help you get there. If you think might struggle, please contact us so we can support you with your fundraising or give you extra time if necessary.
What happens if I don't raise the minimum sponsorship?
It is incredibly important that each charity place runner meets the minimum sponsorship pledge, to help us fund vital research at the UK Dementia Research Institute. There is no legal obligation to make up the shortfall, but if you don't meet your target it is likely to impact on your future chances of gaining an event place with either charity. Please do contact us if you require fundraising advice. In some circumstances it will be possible to have some extra time to meet the fundraising requirement.
When will I know if I have a place?
All charity place applicants will be notified in early November 2018.
Running with your own place
When will I hear about my ballot results?
We’re unsure of the exact date at the moment, but this is likely to be early October 2018.
Why should I run for the Dementia Revolution?
The Dementia Revolution is a special one-year campaign that sees Alzheimer’s Society and Alzheimer's Research UK join forces as Charity of the Year for the 2019 Virgin Money London Marathon. Our aim is to power groundbreaking dementia research and change society’s view of dementia forever. We’d love for you to join our team, as the more people we have standing with us, the better chance we have of ending dementia for good.
Any money you raise with your marathon place will be used to support the UK Dementia Research Institute. This pioneering initiative is bringing together hundreds of scientists across three nations, to lead the charge towards a cure for dementia.
As you have your own place through the ballot, you’ll have no minimum fundraising target. We simply ask that you raise as much as you can to support the Dementia Revolution and help transform lives.
Help and support
What support will I get with my training?
We have partnered with professional coaches at RunningWithUs to ensure you are well supported with your training. You will have access to their marathon training guides and will be invited to our free marathon training days in the New Year. The guys at RunningWithUs are also available by email to provide bespoke training advice if you need it.
What support will I get with my fundraising?
You'll receive a fundraising pack, which contains all the information you need to kick-start your own fundraising revolution! The Dementia Revolution Fundraising team are also available at the end of the phone to support you with your fundraising plans and provide branded materials for your events.
Can my friends and family support me on the day?
Yes! We recommend that they sign up to join our cheer squad by completing the volunteer registration form. By becoming a volunteer, they’ll receive a volunteer pack and all of our volunteer updates about how best to be part of the Dementia Revolution on race day.
If they would simply like to come along, show their Dementia Revolution colours and support you, they can request a cheer pack which includes a t-shirt, cheering sticks and a map of our cheer points.
