Dementia is the leading cause of death in the UK and almost 50 million people are living with the condition worldwide. Dementia takes away peoples' ability to remember names and faces, to carry out daily tasks such as walking to the shops and even to communicate, putting a huge strain on families. There are no effective treatments to slow or stop dementia and research has been on the back-foot for decades - the brain is hugely complicated.
With support from the Dementia Revolution, the UK Dementia Research Institute is rising to meet this challenge.
The UK Dementia Research Institute is the UK's single biggest investment in dementia research. It is revolutionary in scale and scope to transform dementia research in the UK and find the best ways to tackle dementia. It will benefit people with all types of dementia - providing better ways to diagnose, treat, prevent and care. Integral to its success is the support of people with dementia and their families, the public, and people like you.
We are assembling a dream team of dementia researchers who will work together to understand the root causes of dementia and design treatment and prevention strategies to beat it. The diseases behind dementia are hugely complex and to be successful in beating them, we’ll need a range of cutting-edge approaches.
Our ambitious research programmes tackle fundamental questions about dementia. We will improve our understanding of how processes such as inflammation, dysfunction of connections between brain cells and abnormal accumulation of certain proteins in the brain cause dementia, and use that understanding to accelerate progress towards new treatments.
My vision for the UK Dementia Research Institute is a vibrant, ambitious and interactive community that will harness scientific talent to tackle dementia in a way we’ve never seen before.
Any of the 50 programmes in the UK Dementia Research Institute has the potential to reveal the eureka moment a scientist longs for – a discovery that fundamentally changes how we treat a disease and could even lead to cures.
Our aims and expectations are high – we want to find treatments.
But we can’t do it alone. We must make a stand. Join the Dementia Revolution and support the millions of people looking to conquer dementia.
